Right Life Coaching

Lots of people want some help in taking their lives to the next level of . . . something. They may be facing clear hurdles or have a definite goal in mind, or they may just know that the way things are right now could be better somehow. If you are one of these people and you’ve given any thought to seeking assistance, chances are you’ve heard about “life coaches.” It’s hard to turn around without bumping into someone calling themselves a “life coach” these days.

Unfortunately, life coaches aren’t required to have a license or any other qualifications, so the one you select might just like to give advice or, worse yet, just be out to make a buck. My coaching services are something different: a particular style and method of coaching that is modeled on the principles underlying the Right Life Project.

In a nutshell, you don’t exist in a vacuum, and neither do the various components of your life. Instead, you’re a complex system, with your experience of life described by the independent dimensions of psychological health, physical health, social health, and your vocation (whether that involves paid work or not)—and the inevitable interaction between each of these, or interdependence. That is, each dimension can be acted upon separately, and each has bearing on the status of the others. A simple example of interdependence is the way your mood tends to suffer when you're not feeling well physically.

Because of the breadth and complexity of cultivating the richest, healthiest, and most fulfilling life—your Right Life—quick fixes and fads aren’t what’s called for. Instead, I draw from both time-tested and current sources that go to the heart of the matter: theory and research in psychology, the social and life sciences (including neurobiology), and philosophical thought.

Additionally, the quality of mindfulness (or its absence) determines whether you’re fully present for any type of life experience, and able to act and respond consistently in ways that support your long-term growth and wellbeing, instead of leading you to more distress. So, mindfulness is an integral part of the Right Life approach as well. (You can read about mindfulness here and, if you care to give it a try, you can try a guided mindfulness meditation exercise here.)

By spending some time with the resources I've assembled here for you, like my articles and podcasts, you'll have a clear idea of where I’m coming from. That’s one of the benefits of working with me: you’ll know exactly who you’re working with and the kinds of ideas I can use to help you.

It’s also important for you to know that I’m a licensed psychotherapist. Even though coaching isn’t psychotherapy, my mental health expertise adds value for my coaching clients. For one thing, there are often many different ways to achieve a particular goal, but they aren’t created equal. I’ll help you achieve your goals in a way that is safe and supportive of your mental health. Also, I’ll bring to bear a wealth of tools adapted from my therapeutic work that have a track record of success.

As your coach, I can help you clarify your goals, determine what is standing in your way, figure out what steps to take next toward having your Right Life, motivate you to take action, and guide you through the process.

This applies to whatever area of your life you’d like to work on, including work and relationships. I can work with you alone, or with your family or significant other to help you resolve interpersonal issues, or help all of you move forward. I even provide executive and organizational coaching for companies.

Coaching services are provided on an hourly basis, with no commitment because really, your commitment to change is a matter between you and yourself. I provide coaching in a few different ways:

By Video: For coaching clients outside the Los Angeles area, I offer sessions via an encrypted videoconferencing system.

In Person: I offer coaching sessions in my office in West Los Angeles or, for an additional fee and with limitations, at the client’s location.

Full Service: In certain situations and for additional fees, I am available on-call, outside of business hours, and to travel with clients as needed to provide the ultimate in support.
